THERE'S GOOD NEWS AND THEN THERE'S REALLY GOOD NEWS!

Posted by Sakura Kai on Sunday, September 17, 2023, In : Sakura Kai's Blogs
OMG! I just received word from an international film festival the I am BEST ACTRESS. Thank you WINNOWING! When we were shooting WINNOWING, I couldn't imagine this. In fact, I was afraid to watch the movie, because I was worried so much about my English, and had no confidence. OMG! OMG! I am so pleased to hear BEST ACTRESS. Suddenly I am looking forward to appearing in my THIRD film, OTOSOTU - On The Other Side of The Universe. I may have no confidence, but look at it! I did my best, and peopl...

LONG TIME NO POST, BUT TODAY, SOMETHING REALLY WORTH POSTING!

Posted by Sakura Kai on Friday, August 25, 2023, In : Betty's Blogs
In August 2023, JET Progress productions finished filming the movie WINNOWING in which I debuted as the STAR! I played two roles, Draqual Casting Director Aika Abiko and auditioning actress Sakura Kai. As Sakura Kai, I read six roles from master author and screenwriter William Maltese! OMG! It was so much English!  I still can't believe I did it. Now, WINNOWING is available to watch for FREE in Standard Definition on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwZbCAjOFdc. Today, the first viewe...

PhD

Posted by Dan on Friday, April 29, 2022, In : Dan's Blogs

A doctor of philosophy degree wherein one knows more and more about less and less. The key is the word philosophy, meaning “love of wisdom,” whereas doctorate simply implies the highest degree (of). But seriously, what is wisdom? Or knowledge (shouldn’t all degreed individuals possess knowledge)? And where do information and data fit in?

In my experience, the lowest form of education involves the memorization of data. Having a storehouse of data at one’s fingertips used to be a major...

Grrr! Argue! Argue! ああっ!けんか!けんか!

Posted by Dan on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, In : Dan's Blogs
What to do when both partners are tired and grouchy; each needs more but is sooooo tired of working sooooo hard?

First importance is to stop working so hard. Especially during this period of the pandemic (yes, it's STILL going on, making thousands sick and hundreds die -- IT'S NOT OVER). All the chronic stress that's been building over the last year isn't over. People just hope that it is. But it seems like everyone's trying to force things "back to normal" too fast and too soon. And will thi...

JAPANESE SPAGHETTI (日本のイタリアンスパゲティ)

Posted by Betty on Thursday, August 20, 2020, In : Betty's Blogs
Today I made Japanese spaghetti for Dan. He kept asking me to use my Japanese cooking knowledge to make spaghetti. How to do it?

I boiled up some authentic Italian spaghetti al dente

I decided to use American tomato sauce as the base, and added some ketchup. Then I added some homemade vegetable broth and some A-1 sauce (Dan is American and likes both ketchup and A-1 sauce). To make it taste "Japanese," I sautéed pieces of Arabiki sausage (Arabiki means "coarse ground sausage") and shiitake ...

AN HEA (HAPPILY-EVER-AFTER) STORY

Posted by Dan Janik (aka Raymond Gaynor) on Thursday, July 16, 2020, In : Dan's Blogs
Yesterday, having returned from food shopping, while taking off my mask, my Apple AirPods got caught in the elastic bands and flew off. One arced across the room and fell loudly on my (thankfully) wooden floor. Stunned, I picked it up, and, after a quick inspection, popped it back in my ear, pleased to hear it’s happy gong. The other one, however, was nowhere to be found. After a thorough but fruitless search, I reinserted my one AirPod to my ear (one never knows when an important call migh...

DREAM CRUISING! 夢のクルージング!

Posted by Betty on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, In : Betty's Blogs
Over the last years, my husband and I have taken to cruising. We tried cruising once in early spring, another time in summer and again in fall. Mostly short 5 to 7 day cruises around Hawaii and along the Mexican Riviera. More recently we cruised for 10 days from Honolulu to Vancouver B.C. Canada. We had just planned a 21-day dance cruise on Cunard's Queen Elizabeth from Yokohama, Japan to Russia, to Alaska to Vancouver. Unfortunately, COVID-19 appeared in March/April basically stopping the en...

OMG IT'S HAPPENING! びっくりした!

Posted by Dan on Wednesday, May 13, 2020, In : Dan's Blogs
Yesterday, I posted about Loihi, our future eighth Hawaii island (actually there are about 130-plus "islands" in the Hawaiian Archipelago) anticipated to break above the waves in roughly 10,000-plus years.

To my complete surprise, Loihi was mentioned on today's news. Apparently swarms of earthquakes began occurring within the Loihi Seamount yesterday! That probably means that it is growing, or at least groaning. Who knows?

I just think it is really weird that this would occur the day after I p...

HAWAI'I's EIGHTH ISLAND, LO'IHI ハワイで8番目の幻の"ロイヒ島 "

Posted by Dan Janik on Tuesday, May 12, 2020, In : Dan's Blogs
Said to be still about 3000 feet undersea, the Loihi Seamount represents what is likely to be our 8th Hawaiian Island, joining its closest neighbor, Hawaii, as well as Molokai, Maui, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Oahu, Kauai and  Niihau. I've never seen any videos of Lo'ihi steam erupting out of the ocean.

According to Wikipedia, Lōʻihi's last known eruption was in 1996, before a swarm of 4,070 earthquakes, making Lōʻihi at that time the most energetic earthquake swarm in Hawaii recorded history. Lō...

DANCE, DAN, DANCE! ダンス、ダン、ダンス!

Posted by Betty on Monday, May 4, 2020, In : Betty's Blogs
In Hawaii, we have been in "lockdown" for a month now. That means no social dances, performances or competitions. We teach dance at the Palladium for International Ballroom Dance Inc. No Palladium; cancelled indefinitely. We planned to go to UK this year to compete in the British Open. Delayed and delayed. Then we planned to go on a dance cruise. Cancelled, rescheduled, and cancelled again. Our coaches here have had to close their studios, at least for now. We can't get to our coaches in Japa...

FINALLY!!!!

Finally!! 遂に!

Finally, I claimed my unemployment! Happy…and exhausted!

I was furloughed from my Time-Share Company due to COVID-19 at end of the first of week in April. I immediately registered for unemployment just like my company said. At that time, unemployment on Oahu Island (the main island of the seven Hawaiian Islands, together the 50th state of the USA) was already more than forty thousand! It was impossible to access the Hawaii Office of Unemployment or its website to registe...

PARROTS IN THE MANGOS (マンゴの木のオーム)

Posted by Dan on Wednesday, April 22, 2020, In : Dan's Blogs
A year or so ago, Betty and I noticed a pair of green parrots early in the morning from our picture window, squawking loudly as they flew east from the the Koolau Mountains to Kahala near the foothills of Diamond Head. Later, at sunset, we heard them fly back for the night.

Recently we went for a COVID-19 early morning walk and were surprised to hear a lot of squawking coming from a large mango tree. Several green parrots were sitting in the tree eating early appearing bright orange mangos. N...

CHOCOLATE BREAD, CHOCOLATE BREAD FRENCH TOAST

Posted by Betty on Sunday, April 12, 2020, In : Dan's Blogs
I like to bake bread, especially during this stay-at-home time. Last week, we ran out of milk -- fresh and powdered -- and I didn't want to go out to a supermarket during this high-risk COVID-19 week just for milk for bread. Calling around, I was disappointed to learn that all our local drive-by-and-pickup grocery stores were out of it. Out. None. Nada.

So, I turned to the trusty internet. Powdered milk was being advertised everywhere, but each time I attempted to order it, it was "temporaril...

SOCIAL DISTANCING - WHAT FUN! :-)

Posted by Dan on Saturday, March 28, 2020, In : Dan's Blogs
In these days of rampant COVID-19, it's all about "social distancing." Yes? Well, let's think about that for a moment. Distancing, yes. But actually it's all about PHYSICAL distancing, really. And what is the main side effect of physical distancing? An overwhelming need for social CLOSENESS. There's nothing like a few weeks in physical isolation or quarantine to make one scream for social closeness, whether by snail mail, email, phone, message (messaging is my personal favorite because I can ...

BUILDING A HEALTHIER HOME (住み易い部屋)

Posted by Setsuko Tsuchiya on Saturday, March 14, 2020, In : Betty's Blogs
In early December 2019, we woke up to find a pool of water in our bathroom, working its way under the wood-like laminate flooring in our hallway, living room and two bedrooms. OMG! A pipe had burst above us in the condominium building we live in. Right away, insurance, mitigators and contractors swooped in to help. It was, however, only after over three months of living with cardboard flooring, that we were able to begin reconstruction, and this time -- no unhealthy laminate, we wanted real w...

A ZIG-ZAGGY FISHTAIL

Posted by Betty on Monday, March 11, 2019, In : Betty's Blogs
Nope. Not a new fossil from China. Not a deformed fillet either. We're working on a new and unique figure for our Quickstep; namely a Zig-Zag, followed by a Cross Swivel amalgamated with a Fishtail. Neither is new, of course; in fact, they've been around so long few competitors are dancing them in Quickstep, focusing instead on a variety of novel runs. Amalgamated, however, these three classic figures create a unique break to the rhythm and flow of Quickstep.

Looking over the over 30+ revisio...

Happy New Year!

It is already Jan. 6th. Time goes so fast.

My husband and I went to Hawaii Kai Retirement Center to host a monthly dance. It's strictly volunteer, and I love it!

This is the first event of 2019. We hold it on the first Sunday of every month. This month was New Year's Party!

From 6:00 pm, retirement center residents gathered at "The Ice Cream Parlor" in the Center next to the dining room in Phase Two. We danced to Glen Miller's music for 20 minutes, then we did a Tango performance,...

FROZEN IN HAWAII

Posted by Betty on Monday, October 1, 2018, In : Dan's Blogs
Watching Disney's "Frozen" reminds us that somewhere in the world, there's more snow than just shave ice in a bowl. Shave ice is Hawaii's way of remembering what winter is like elsewhere. In fact, my favorite winter (i.e. shave ice) is Waialua dark chocolate flavor. Yumm. Now that's what I call winter.

Being originally from Alaska, I'm often asked why I moved to Hawaii. Sunshine, tradewinds, sweet smelling flowers, lots of great ballroom and latin dancing. I'm equally often asked if I miss Al...

It's been awhile, and you might be wondering what Betty and I are doing. I'll let Betty "kiss and tell" in her posting. For me, I've been being a good author.

You probably know about my two children's books, A WHALE'S TALE (Savant 2009) and THE TURTLE DANCES (Savant 2013), at least I hope you do! If you haven't read them, now is the time! They're available world-wide from Amazon.com. The first is about ohana (Hawaiian for "family"), and the second is about enjoying moving -- "dance, dance, da...

It's the last day of June 2014, and three days before my next big one.

I've already begun celebrating, of course. A birthday is just too big for one day!

As a publisher, editor and "multi-award-winning author," I'm often asked by writers aspiring to become authors, what I recommend to help make the transition easier or more effective. The answer is a bit like a keen amateur dancer asking how to become a professional dancer. The answer is, there is no one answer I know other than, if you're a dancer, dancing your heart out every moment of your life, and, if you're a writer, writing your heart out every moment of your life and showing what you'r...

THE WHALES AT TURTLE BAY?

Posted by Betty and Dan on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, In : Dan's Blogs
Yeah, here we are at the famous Turtle Bay Resort on the north shore of Oahu for four days of well-deserved R & R. And, yeah, we've been watching one after another humpback whale spout, jump, slap the water with fins and tails, and otherwise go crazy. But, alas, we've not seen a single turtle.

Three or so years ago when we visited there were plenty of turtles. Now, nary a one! So, with nothing else to do here but relax, I've put on my thinking cap and come up with some possible explanations f...

Christmas Time is Here

Call me old-fashioned, but Christmas, especially here in Hawaii, is one of my number-one, ichiban, best-ever holiday. While in much of the world, it's only one day, in Hawaii, it lasts a month or more to the New Year.

Christmas begins around Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving holiday in Hawaii being more of a thanks giving for the Christmas holidays. Next comes Christmas shopping. Welcoming the humpback whales back to Hawaii. Volunteering with your favorite charity. Watching Santa come to Hawaii on a...

Wadjda

This weekend, Betty and I fled from the October heat and humidity by going to a "refrigerated" movie house. To both our surprise, the move we chose to cool ourselves in turned out to be one of the best we've seen in ages. "Wadjda" is the story of a 10-year-old Saudi girl's mental coming-of-age in a Salafi Sunni Muslim environment. Filmed by a Saudi director in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, with Saudi actors and actresses, the movie is a "must see" for non-Muslims attempting to puzzle through today's d...

Turtles, Turtles, Turtles! Awesome!

Posted by Dan and Betty on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
Now that my new children's Color-Me-Please book, THE TURTLE DANCES (Savant 2013), has been released, I'm out looking for some stuffed animals to include along with the book. They've got to be realistic (I'm a naturalist) and yet cute and cuddly (after all, Isla, the dancing turtle and her dance partner, Surf, are beautiful turtles in looks and heart). While I haven't yet fully decided, I'm favoring these GUNDimals turtles.

What do you think? Have you read my new book about Isla, the Hawaiian ...

Solitaire!

Do you know Solitaire? It is a card game that I like it. It is also a digital game, too. I enjoyed playing it from the first. I like it so much I one time played it all day and night.

Dan and I play the game several times every night in bed before going to sleep. Now we have accumulated almost 400,000 points. At first, it was not so difficult to solve, but recently it has become quite hard to complete a game. Still, the purpose is to use our "procedural" brain to relax to go to sleep.

The Ecological Perspective!!

When I read Dan's Blog tonight, I remembered a class I took calle, "The Ecological Perspective."  During this course I had to give a five-minute presentation for my final. The title of mine was "Geckoes and Humans Coexist in Hawaii." From the ecological perspective, domestic households in Hawaii commonly include humans and geckos.

I actually dislike geckoes. One day after I moved to Hawaii, I looked up at the celling and saw a small off-white colored creature looking down at me. I screamed. I ...

The Legend of Studio 54

Our last time in Las Vegas (yeh, everyone who's anyone goes to Las Vegas at least once from Honolulu), we made it a priority to stop and go dancing at the MGM Grand's albeit watered down version of the famous Studio 54. I must admit right at the beginning that neither of us ever had the opportunity of going to the original in the Big Apple. So, instead we danced our hearts out all evening to Disco '70 music and partied until the wee hours just as if we'd been at the "real" Studio 54 in the 70...

When Men Cry for Joy...

Posted by Betty and Dan on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
The earth is a magnificent place. Think Swiss Alps, red autumn leaves, the scent of frangiapanni in the air, ripe mangoes. It's people who are the problem. Hurt, depressed, vengeful, they replay their hurt on one another over and over, incessantly, hoping against hope that someone, somewhere will save them from themselves. Is a better world possible when so much pain is circulating around in ever widening spirals? Is our fate that of a magnificent world of damaged Conan the Barbarians where t...

Fowl Weather

Posted by Betty and Dan on Thursday, June 6, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
Betty and I moved to Hawaii in 1993, and for the next 14 years (7 x 2) the weather here has been warmer, surprisingly with less rain. In 1993, the pattern was, starting in January, cool and dry, slowly warming and getting more humid to September, when it was very humid and very hot. Then the rains would come. Tropical storms with occasional hurricanes the dumped so much water at a time, we sometimes had to stop driving, being unable to see anything several feet in front of the windshield. Now...

Going Apple Bananas!

A banana is a banana is a banana, right? I used to think that when I lived on the mainland (contiguous 48 U. S. states), but when I moved to Hawaii I learned different. Hawaii has: plantains, commercial bananas, baby commercial bananas, organic bananas, ice cream banana and apple bananas. Of the them all, apple bananas are my favorite.

Apple bananas are "local" fare. They're smaller, firmer, and slightly orange-red when bitten into. They have a crisp, clean taste (the way apples do) with no h...

What Color is a Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle?

Posted by Betty and Dan on Thursday, May 16, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
Okay - the answer must be green, Right?

Wrong!

I've been turtle-watching for over 5 years now all along the Oahu coastline, and Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles range from light grey to yellow to green (yes) to brown to almost black. Why is that? I've no idea, but I can vouch for the spread in color with direct observations. So why do they call these cute, solitary, largely vegetarian turtles Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles? I think it's because we become green with envy at how sweet-natured, easy-going...

I enjoyed making lunch and dinner today for Betty. It's her day off and she deserves it. She works so hard. I appreciate her.
