Wadjda

Posted by Betty and Dan on Monday, October 28, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
This weekend, Betty and I fled from the October heat and humidity by going to a "refrigerated" movie house. To both our surprise, the move we chose to cool ourselves in turned out to be one of the best we've seen in ages. "Wadjda" is the story of a 10-year-old Saudi girl's mental coming-of-age in a Salafi Sunni Muslim environment. Filmed by a Saudi director in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, with Saudi actors and actresses, the movie is a "must see" for non-Muslims attempting to puzzle through today's d...

PBS Antique Road Show

Posted by Betty and Dan on Monday, August 19, 2013, In : Betty's Blogs
I like to watch one hour TV program, "Antique show" every Sunday.  Today I watched this program, one man brought Koi fish shape weathervane for the program.  He bought this $17,500 from the dealer.  The professional collector on TV explained the Koi weathervane that is fake and value price is $500.  Oh my God!  The dealer sold it o expensive to  this man.  I can not believe it.  I wonder that the man could not figure it out, it was right or not.  It was expensive shopping.  Poor man!

You see, I was born on the Third of July, and believed until I was six that the fireworks the next day were in celebration of my having been born! Really! I was totally crushed when my school chums refused to back down...

American Jokes

Posted by Betty and Dan on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
If there's one attribute that sets people apart from all other living things, it certainly must be humor. And if there's one attribute that sets Americans apart, it's probably American jokes. So here are a few of my favorite American jokes.

A classic American-style pun (malapropisms or paronomasia): A pessimist's blood type is always b-negative.

Or how about this one: What do you call Santa's helpers? Subordinate clauses.

The geek joke: Two hydrogen atoms walk into a bar. One says, I think I’...

"How Low Can You Go?" - An Old "Limbo" Dance Saying

Posted by Betty and Dan on Saturday, April 27, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
Hello, Sentence Dancers!

As a professor of liberal arts who teaches English 101/102 and Writing, and the author of over 60 books and articles, I am often asked how to make one's writing more interesting. One first-year college secret is to use differing sentence structure. But first, it is important to understand the difference between a clause and a sentence. A clause is a group of words with a subject and a verb. A sentence is a group of words (1) with a subject, and (2) a verb, that (3) beg...
