Urban Legends

Posted by Betty and Dan on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
Several nights ago, Betty and I had the privilege of viewing "Legends in Concert (Waikiki)." I expected to see an Elvis Presley look-alike, and maybe several other star look-alikes. I'm from the 60s and 70s so I can say from personal experience that Elvis looked and sang like Elvis, Stephen Tyler like Stephen Tyler (of Aerosmith), Madonna like Madonna and Michael Jackson as Michael Jackson. What blew me out of my seat was that in many ways the look-alikes and show exceeded those they were por...

Peter Pan

Posted by Betty and Dan on Sunday, May 19, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
The "Peter Pan Syndrome" is said to "affect people who do not want or feel unable to grow up, people with the body of an adult but the mind of a child" or "describes men, who are childlike in their relationships, their ability to handle responsibilities, and their pursuit of pleasure." Well enough, but what it's really about is curiosity and the joy of discovery -- the simpler joys of childhood.

In this world of money, money, money, and power, power, power, wouldn't it be nice to share somet...

What Color is a Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle?

Posted by Betty and Dan on Thursday, May 16, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
Okay - the answer must be green, Right?

I've been turtle-watching for over 5 years now all along the Oahu coastline, and Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles range from light grey to yellow to green (yes) to brown to almost black. Why is that? I've no idea, but I can vouch for the spread in color with direct observations. So why do they call these cute, solitary, largely vegetarian turtles Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles? I think it's because we become green with envy at how sweet-natured, easy-going...

This morning I woke up and quickly wrote down a poem for Betty. I hope she likes it (I think she does). It is for her. One of a kind. Hers and hers alone.

The poem came to me in a flash, as if by magic, from God, or from the Greek muses.

I know it's not "high poetry" but rather its "heart poetry" -- from the bottom of my heart.

Where does inspiration come from? In this case, it really wasn't magic, or God or the Greek muses. It was from my love of Betty. She's the most important person in my w...

Betty's Wake Up Song

Posted by Betty and Dan on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, In : Betty's Blogs
Good Evening!

"Betty's Wake Up Song"

"Good Morning," said the chicken (Cock-a-doodle-do)
"Good Morning," said the crow (Caw, Caw)
"Good Morning," said the bright sunshine
There's something you should know.

There's lots of things to do today!
And all of them are fun.
Get up! get up! get out of bed!
Before the day is done.

As an undergraduate liberal arts professor, I'm often asked how one knows what's really true. After all, isn't that what undergraduate college is all about -- critical thinking -- knowing what's true without needing the help of a professor? The answer is a simple, "Yes." Four years of undergraduate study (1/25th of one's life) and about $120,000 (the price of a starter house) buys an American college student one thing: critical thinking (critical reading, listening, writing and speaking). But...

American Jokes

Posted by Betty and Dan on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
If there's one attribute that sets people apart from all other living things, it certainly must be humor. And if there's one attribute that sets Americans apart, it's probably American jokes. So here are a few of my favorite American jokes.

A classic American-style pun (malapropisms or paronomasia): A pessimist's blood type is always b-negative.

Or how about this one: What do you call Santa's helpers? Subordinate clauses.

The geek joke: Two hydrogen atoms walk into a bar. One says, I think I’...

The Turtle Dances

Posted by Betty and Dan on Monday, May 6, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
I don't think I've shared that I'm a multi-award-winning author of a variety of books ranging from non-ficition educational works to poetry collections to novels and children's books. My first children's book, SOURDOUGH SCOTT'S BEDTIME FAIRYTALES FROM ALASKA (Publication Consultants, 2005) is a collection of three "modern" fairy tales I made up and told around campfires throughout Alaska until someone suggested I write them down for posterity.

That done, I wrote a non-fiction education work, ...

What to Do About Guns?

Posted by Betty and Dan on Saturday, May 4, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
The USA is once again embroiled in discussions about what to do about guns. On the one hand, our nation was born in armed revolution. On the other hand, we are no longer engaged in revolution, and guns are being use as weapons of injury and death against citizens on more than a daily basis. It is being suggested that the US government have stricter "gun control laws," but this doesn't seem to me likely to work for two reasons: First, those who would use a gun to threaten or kill another human...
