I am still translating my book, THE POWER OF DANCE from English to Japanese. Today I asked my husband, Dan, some questions about the translation. He asked me that what is the genre of your new book? Eh? I was confused.

"Is your book fiction or non-fiction?" he asked. Now, he became once again an English 101 professor, and I returned to being a college student.

"It is non-fiction," I replied. 

"Will it be a textbook?" he asked. 

"Maybe," I replied. "Maybe not." 

He reminded me that if it is a textbook it would be a collection of essays, each essay a chapter of my book. There are five basic kinds of non-fiction essays. Were the chapters of my new book essays? 

We researched about essays:
1) Descriptive essay
2) Narrative essay
3) Expository essay - This is the most important one. It is the only one with "truth value." 
4) Persuasive essay
5) Argumentative essay 

Yes, now I remembered the five kinds of essays. Things from my school days came flooding back. Don't forget, I reminded myself. I worked hard to learn these.

"So is your book a collection of essays?" he asked. 

"Maybe," I said. 

Maybe it's not a textbook then. So, what kind of book is yours? Did you write mostly your opinions? Did you write it for news like a Journalistic work? History? Travelogue? Biography? Memoir? Autobiography? Philosophical treatise? Meditation? Commentary?

We discussed a lot and reviewed again the five types of essays. Finally, I decided my book is a non-fiction commentary. But the chapters may also be expository essays, so maybe it will become a textbook someday. He agreed. 

When translating over time, the purpose and genre can shift. I probably should have decided the purpose and genre before I started writing or translating. But, anyway, I now know what its purpose and genre is. "So, do your best near as you near the end," I said to myself. And I will.

はい、5種類のエッセイを思い出しました。一生懸命勉強した事がよみがえってきました。決して忘れないで下さいね、私は自分自身に思い出させました。私はこれらを学ぶために一生懸命勉強した。

「それで、あなたの本はエッセイ集ですか？」彼は尋ねた。

「たぶん」と私は言った。
多分それは教科書ではありません。それで、どんな本ですか？　主に貴女の意見を書きましたか？ジャーナリズムのようなニュースのために書いたのですか？歴史？旅行記？バイオグラフィー？伝記？自伝？哲学的論文？瞑想？解説？

私たちは多くのことを議論し、5つのタイプのエッセイを再検討しました。最後に、私の本はノンフィクションの解説であると判断しました。しかし、章は解説的なエッセイかもしれないので、いつの日か教科書になるかもしれませんね。彼は同意した。

時間の経過とともに翻訳すると、目的とジャンルが変わる可能性があります。執筆や翻訳を始める前に、目的やジャンルを決めておけばよかったのではないでしょうか。しかし、とにかく、私は今、その目的とジャンルが何であるかを理解しています。 「もうすぐに翻訳を終える事が出来そう！最善を尽くします！」と私は自分自身を励ました。そして、私は翻訳が終わる迄頑張ります！
