I’D like to start today’s post with a special experience I had while working for NASA (I was a U.S. National Academy of Science/National Research Council senior research associate assigned to NASA-Johnson Space Center in the mid-70’s to assist with water quality issues on the proposed International Space Station and up and coming Space Shuttle). One of my many objectives was to work on reclaiming used water to drinkable (potable) standards. At that time about half of the launch weight of resupplies would be water, making it one of if not the most expensive supplies. A small glass of water was estimated to cost $14,000. Most of the reclamation efforts used mechanical vapor compression/distilation or specially engineered membranes, each with it’s strengths and weaknesses. Part of my job was to figure out how Gaia — Mother Earth — did it and see if it was possible to miniaturize the process to fit into a small corner of the proposed space station, moonbase or Mars colony.


After considerable research, I decided that it was all about living plants. They not only exchanged carbon dioxide for the oxygen animals and humans needed, but reclaimed used water to probable standards for further use by plants and animals. They did the water reclamation by a somewhat complex process that was a combination of root area processing and leaf transpiration. But I need to digress.


I met a fellow NASA researcher named Cleve Backster, the pioneer behind lie detectors. It was his belief that plants somehow communicated with other plants and their caretakers, though, as might be expected, humans were simply too unconscious to have already figured this out. During his research, NASA as well as numerous “fringe” neurobiologists of those days, became aware of “secret” Soviet experiments in which cabbages hooked up to a sensitive oscilloscope showed an electrical response when being cut up for a human lunch. What was more intriguing, however, was that they showed the electrical response often BEFORE being diced, at the moment when the knife-wielding chef DECIDED to slice and dice. This raised the question of whether plants could somehow sense the rationalizations or emotions of their caretakers, or, in this instance, their terminator. I left his laboratory wondering exactly how plants, if conscious, would feel about me, a long time mostly-vegetarian. Would they cheer when I sliced up a piece of beef or a fish, and electronically at least, shiver or wither when I got out my salad knife.

Neurobiologists have long held that plants can’t be conscious because they don’t have a “big brain” — a cerebrum — like higher animals. But I’ve come to appreciate several things: First, plants, if they think, surely think slower, or at least more diffusely than animals. Second, they may be conscious only in a sort of universally life-connected way. Finally, having been around longer than animals, perhaps they control us rather than our popular farmer-held opposite. Perhaps some plants, albeit slower and more diffusely, domesticated us to care for them and give them an evolutionary edge. At the least, we should be appreciative of them, as without them, Earth would lack the oxygen, potable water and food upon which our very existence depends.


In THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor (that’s me), I raise this issue of the importance of plants to the very existence of animals and humans, and what is the hidden role of humans as true stewards of the Earth. Can you hear the plants cheering?


And, yes, I still wonder if plants like, dislike, or are truly as indifferent as most people what to believe towards vegetarians and mostly-vegetarians like me.
