HIT BY A SMOOTH CRIMINAL?

WARNING! ALERT! Be extra careful when dealing with the "new" or "updated" online company services. I wanted to open a free account so I could on occasion FTP one or two specific files, and instead watched with horror as everything on my desktop disappeared. I tried stopping the process (didn't work), I feverishly searched the internet for a phone number to call (no phone number), and tried the company's "chat" (got a "bot" with nothing of value to offer). Finally, had to just disconnec from the internet. Looked for an email address to ask the company for assistance only to find there was none. Removed the program from my computer with great difficulty (the nasty little thing was multiply embedded). Was like extracting a rotten tooth! Luckily, I had a backup. Two month's old backup, but at least a backup. Never download without a complete backup first. Now I'm running my Macintosh Time Machine backup restore. Whew!
I realized, as I began retrieving what more recent information I could from my email backups that it was my fault. What it took me a few more hours to realize was that unlike COVID-19 that looks for just one mistake and does its damage, I had made several: First, if I'd researched the site more (it was one I trusted from past use), I would have discovered the lack of customer service, and absence of any real contact approaches. RED FLAG #1. Second, I assumed it was the same (or at least basically similar to the program I'd had good experiences with in the past. Actually, during the download and integration process, I noticed numerous changes, including notes and alerts that weren't there before. RED FLAG #2. Had I checked online, I would have noticed warnings from other users regarding crashing one's drive and having no access to legitimate help like a phone number or online chat with someone other than a "bot." RED FLAG #3. I could go on, but that's enough to remind me that on today's internet, anything can happen, and sometimes will.
It would be easy to say that Trumpism (outright deceit, immorality, misdirection, "money-is-everything-as-long-as-you-don't-get-caught" thinking, propaganda, lack of support or service, even frank illegality) exist only in politics, but alas, it seems to be increasingly slopping over to the internet. Maybe because businesses are increasingly having to move onto the internet, and, well, "there's a sucker [like me?] born every minute." In the past, I thought that one of the purposes of government was to protect its citizens from this kind of fraud, but, alas again, America is suffering greatly from lack of attention to critical infrastructure, like making the internet safe for citizens and business. Alas, again.
Well, I've learned my lesson. Whenever hiking the internet watch out for snakes! But I have to say that where business used to be a pleasure and, when customers received what they needed and said so, a joy, it's anything but these days. I wonder if business can survive these dastardly four years. I hope so, but I have to wonder...
