Today's post is somewhat complex and begins with a 1982 film entitled Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance -- followed by Powaqqatsi (1988) and Naqoyqatsi (2002). Considered by many a must-see trilogy, it's the over-riding premise of Koyaanisqatsi that I want to emphasize here is that the "problem" today isn't COVID-19 (that's just the match), or broken infrastructure (that's just the fuse), but extending decades into the past, it is a growing lack of balance (that's the dynamite). Not balance between two extremes (that's conflict, not balance), but balance across a the whole spectrum, from one extreme to the middle to the other extreme. And not static balance either, but a dance of balance occurring over time. It's in gradual re-integration rather than dis-integration, in the coalesce of truthful information rather than dis-information, the gradual exercise and release of power rather than it's forced concentration that will determine healthy balance. Clearly one thing we need in addition to a quick fix for the COVID-19 pandemic, and a medium fix for our failing infrastructures, is to restore our balance, our individual and colletive dance of life. When we do that, our collective dance will lead us forward to a future encompassing a new kind of stewardship worthy of our existence.
