Why is Neurobiology Important? なぜ神経生物学が重要なのですか?

March 15, 2021

There are many ways to explain nature, natural things and events. It is our human habit to explain them using analogies to things we feel comfortable with. For example, a computer specialist might say that the brain is a gigantic computer. But is it, really? A plumber might say that the heart is like a complex pump. But is that all it really is? A lover might just as well say that the heart is what attracts one person to another. Is that any better or worse an explanation than that of the plumber?

Neurobiology looks specifically at how the nervous system and nerves, which invigorate and control all the organs of the body works, and uses that to explain biological phenomena. It's about explaining how something biological ACTUALLY works.

When I was studying for my doctorate, there were many different explanations as to how humans acquired language. Most explained the process through analogy. My PhD dissertation was on "A Neurobiological Theory and Method of Language Acquisition," and looked instead at how biological organisms actually acquire or don't acquire language. We don't learn language like a computer. We don't learn it because we're taught. We don't learn it because we want or would love to. We learn it through a series of biological reflexes such that we reproduce what we see, hear, touch, small and taste. An actual select few neurons in the brain compare what we think we're doing with what we sense, something which when accompanied by emotions like pleasure, pain or joy, we call empathy. Together, these processes are how we actually acquire language, and the neurobiological approach to explaining them can help us decide how better to assist in language acquisition. One need only substitute any biological activity, for example "dance," for "language acquisition" to begin learning the "real" neurobiological explanation -- the way something actually happens --  in order to best help oneself and others.

Discovery my book! 本の事で再確認!

March 10, 2021
I am still translating my book, THE POWER OF DANCE from English to Japanese. Today I asked my husband, Dan, some questions about the translation. He asked me that what is the genre of your new book? Eh? I was confused.

"Is your book fiction or non-fiction?" he asked. Now, he became once again an English 101 professor, and I returned to being a college student.

"It is non-fiction," I replied.

"Will it be a textbook?" he asked.

"Maybe," I replied. "Maybe not."

He reminded me that if it is a textb...

When did you become interested in neurobiology? 神経生物学に興味を持ったのはいつですか?

March 9, 2021
My interest in neurobiology didn't come from one source. Initially, it came from my practice as a pediatrician. Whenever I treated a patient I asked myself, "How did that person's nervous system do that?" This gave me a unique perspective on auto-immune disease, an area of constantly growing interest in medicine. Later, as I began working with traumatized children and adults. Asking that same question gave me insights into how to treat them most effectively. After retiring from active practi...

Whale Story 鯨のお話

March 6, 2021
Today I talk a whale's tale.

Dan and I watched Nature on TV. It is about a whale that breaches onto two people on the kayak in the ocean in California. The two people in the Kayak jumped in the ocean as the whale twisted allowing the two people to escape. A big splash and two people were swimming in the ocean.

One person who was touched the whale spent the next year trying to learn more about the accident and the whale. He ...

Exotic! エキゾチック!

March 3, 2021
When my husband received a cancellation letter from our homeowner's insurance carrier, he said that the letter was exotic. What? Ah, tha word "exotic" instantly caught my ears. I listened quietly finally asking, "What did you say?"

He said the letter was unusual.

"No," I said. "You said something else."

"Oh, you mean "exotic?" he replied.

I also asked why he chose the word "exotic" for this sentence? I could recall "exotic" being applied exotic dancer or exotic face.

According to dictionary.com, ...

A NEUROBIOLOGY OF...? 神経生物学とは...?

February 28, 2021
When I began studying the body, I joined the Neurobiological Learning Society (https://neurobiologicallearningsociety.yolasite.com). I met world experts in different aspects of neurobiology including dance. I learned many theories about how the body learns, including the neurobiological foundations of my master's degree in somatic therapy.

What exactly is neurobiology?

"-Ology" means the study of. "Bio" means living things. "Neuro"mean s nervous system. While one can study living things from ...

MORNING CHAT モーニングチャット

February 26, 2021
Dan and I wake up at 6:00 am, BUT He usually gets up right after he wakes while I like to lounge about in bed in the morning.

Today, we both stayed in bed and talked about subjectivity and objectively. We talked their meanings in English and Japanese. He said Japanese words are very rich in meaning. For example, when we write a name in kanji, both the characters and their combination together have meaning, typically more than one. On the other hand, when he writes his name (Dan) using characte...

Dance Exercise! ダンス エクササイズ

February 18, 2021
It's been almost a year since we last went dancing with other couples. In the meantime, Betty has been working hard on her new book tentatively called either "The Power of Dance" or "Dance Power." Every other day Dan and I either dance together at our house or do toning exercises so we'll be ready to go dancing again. Today we completed the first part of our "Beginner" level dance exercises, directed to gently strengthening upper arm ballroom and Latin dance frame. You're the first ones to se...

Salmon Salad Sandwiches! サーモンサラダサンドイッチ!

February 13, 2021
Today, my husband and I faced another COVID catastrophe: What to make for dinner after a year of home cooking. It had to be healthy, tasty and inexpensive. Dan made Salmon Salad Sandwiches. .

When he opened the can of salmon, he said "Sockeye salmon is the best. I avoid pink salmon, what we called 'dog salmon' when growing up in Alaska. It's a pretty pink but tastes like dry cardboard unless highly processes."

To the sockeye salmon, he added thin-sliced celery, sweet pickle relish, fresh grou...
