LIVING WITH COVID-19 COVID-19での生活

The whole world has been engaged in blunting the exponential increase in the number of new cases of COVID-19, mainly to allow our medical systems to be able to accommodate the rising numbers of seriously ill persons. But with the leveling off of new cases, nations, states and communities anxious to "resume things normally" I'm noticing many people no longer taking protective measures as if the leveling off means the demise of the virus and new cases. Unfortunately, very wrong. We haven't come close to "winning," but rather are moving into the second phase of any epidemic: learning to live with it, its continued spread and resulting deaths. The worst case scenario is that with relaxed attention, the numbers will once again increase exponentially, but we won't know for two to four weeks.
I boarded our small elevator to check my mail, and was confronted by several people trying to push their way into the elevator. No masks. When I asked where their masks were, they glowered at me, and, for my own protection, had to exit the elevator prematurely. In the lobby, not a single person was wearing a mask or paying attention to social distancing! As our officials continue to declare that it's finally okay to "open up" stores, I fear that the message people get is that the pandemic is finally over, and we needn't take preventative measures any more.
