Most people know me as Dan, but a few also know that I write books, and in some cases, under a pen name. When I write thrillers like TOTAL MELTDOWN (Borgo/Wildside) or my newly released THE EDGE OF MADNESS, I use my pen name, Raymond Gaynor. When I write erotica, I use my pen name Gary Martine. When I write children's books, I use my "real" name. As an author, I think it is important to help readers "feel comfortable" with the author, and pen names, I think, help make that happen.
In THE EDGE OF MADNESS, three young firebrands struggle to find themselves and live in a future world where the number of choices and their diversity are much greater than today. It may sound good, but it's not so easy. With choices come responsibility. Also more choices favors learning through curiosity and discovery, leading to richer meanings in life, favoring knowledge and wisdom. Again, it may sound appealing, but the accompanying responsibility makes living "on the edge of madness" infinitely more challenging. But it also can make life infinitely richer and more meaningful.
Letting people learn through their own effort, rather than making them learn through teaching is the difference between encouraging individual choice (volition) and forcing people to learn (violation). One is empowering; the other disempowering. One emphasizes meaning, the other information. One lets people learn what they want; the other forces people to learn what someone else thinks best for them. One encourages self-actualization; the other regimentation. One values voluntary cooperation; the other obedience. It's all about the three V's: volution; volition and violation!
