REAL SOMATIC THERAPY!

Posted by Betty (Setsuko Tsuchiya) on Monday, January 7, 2019, In : Betty's Blogs
Happy New Year!

It is already Jan. 6th. Time goes so fast.

My husband and I went to Hawaii Kai Retirement Center to host a monthly dance. It's strictly volunteer, and I love it!

This is the first event of 2019. We hold it on the first Sunday of every month. This month was New Year's Party!

From 6:00 pm, retirement center residents gathered at "The Ice Cream Parlor" in the Center next to the dining room in Phase Two. We danced to Glen Miller's music for 20 minutes, then we did a Tango performance,...

FROZEN IN HAWAII

Posted by Betty on Monday, October 1, 2018, In : Dan's Blogs
Watching Disney's "Frozen" reminds us that somewhere in the world, there's more snow than just shave ice in a bowl. Shave ice is Hawaii's way of remembering what winter is like elsewhere. In fact, my favorite winter (i.e. shave ice) is Waialua dark chocolate flavor. Yumm. Now that's what I call winter.

Being originally from Alaska, I'm often asked why I moved to Hawaii. Sunshine, tradewinds, sweet smelling flowers, lots of great ballroom and latin dancing. I'm equally often asked if I miss Al...

WRITER's UNBLOCK

Posted by Dan on Tuesday, September 16, 2014, In : Dan's Blogs
It's been awhile, and you might be wondering what Betty and I are doing. I'll let Betty "kiss and tell" in her posting. For me, I've been being a good author.

You probably know about my two children's books, A WHALE'S TALE (Savant 2009) and THE TURTLE DANCES (Savant 2013), at least I hope you do! If you haven't read them, now is the time! They're available world-wide from Amazon.com. The first is about ohana (Hawaiian for "family"), and the second is about enjoying moving -- "dance, dance, da...

THE WHALES AT TURTLE BAY?

Posted by Betty and Dan on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, In : Dan's Blogs
Yeah, here we are at the famous Turtle Bay Resort on the north shore of Oahu for four days of well-deserved R & R. And, yeah, we've been watching one after another humpback whale spout, jump, slap the water with fins and tails, and otherwise go crazy. But, alas, we've not seen a single turtle.

Three or so years ago when we visited there were plenty of turtles. Now, nary a one! So, with nothing else to do here but relax, I've put on my thinking cap and come up with some possible explanations f...

Christmas Time is Here

Posted by Dan and Betty on Saturday, December 28, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
Call me old-fashioned, but Christmas, especially here in Hawaii, is one of my number-one, ichiban, best-ever holiday. While in much of the world, it's only one day, in Hawaii, it lasts a month or more to the New Year.

Christmas begins around Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving holiday in Hawaii being more of a thanks giving for the Christmas holidays. Next comes Christmas shopping. Welcoming the humpback whales back to Hawaii. Volunteering with your favorite charity. Watching Santa come to Hawaii on a...

Turtles, Turtles, Turtles! Awesome!

Posted by Dan and Betty on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
Now that my new children's Color-Me-Please book, THE TURTLE DANCES (Savant 2013), has been released, I'm out looking for some stuffed animals to include along with the book. They've got to be realistic (I'm a naturalist) and yet cute and cuddly (after all, Isla, the dancing turtle and her dance partner, Surf, are beautiful turtles in looks and heart). While I haven't yet fully decided, I'm favoring these GUNDimals turtles.

What do you think? Have you read my new book about Isla, the Hawaiian ...

The Ecological Perspective!!

Posted by Betty and Dan on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, In : Betty's Blogs
When I read Dan's Blog tonight, I remembered a class I took calle, "The Ecological Perspective."  During this course I had to give a five-minute presentation for my final. The title of mine was "Geckoes and Humans Coexist in Hawaii." From the ecological perspective, domestic households in Hawaii commonly include humans and geckos.

I actually dislike geckoes. One day after I moved to Hawaii, I looked up at the celling and saw a small off-white colored creature looking down at me. I screamed. I ...

My Husband, Dan!

Posted by Betty and Dan on Friday, June 7, 2013, In : Betty's Blogs
Aloha!

I write in English tonight, too.  When I went to my interview, I realized that I want to improve English more so I tried to write my Blog in English.  This is challenging for me and how much I can write it in English.
May be I will write my Blog in Japanese tomorrow.  I already am tired to write my Blog in English.

Today, I write about part one of my husband.  Dan,
American, my husband and I met in California (CA). When my lady friend and I went to social dance class at YMCA in Berkeley CA...

Fowl Weather

Posted by Betty and Dan on Thursday, June 6, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
Betty and I moved to Hawaii in 1993, and for the next 14 years (7 x 2) the weather here has been warmer, surprisingly with less rain. In 1993, the pattern was, starting in January, cool and dry, slowly warming and getting more humid to September, when it was very humid and very hot. Then the rains would come. Tropical storms with occasional hurricanes the dumped so much water at a time, we sometimes had to stop driving, being unable to see anything several feet in front of the windshield. Now...

Going Apple Bananas!

Posted by Betty and Dan on Saturday, June 1, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
A banana is a banana is a banana, right? I used to think that when I lived on the mainland (contiguous 48 U. S. states), but when I moved to Hawaii I learned different. Hawaii has: plantains, commercial bananas, baby commercial bananas, organic bananas, ice cream banana and apple bananas. Of the them all, apple bananas are my favorite.

Apple bananas are "local" fare. They're smaller, firmer, and slightly orange-red when bitten into. They have a crisp, clean taste (the way apples do) with no h...

What Color is a Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle?

Posted by Betty and Dan on Thursday, May 16, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
Okay - the answer must be green, Right?

Wrong!

I've been turtle-watching for over 5 years now all along the Oahu coastline, and Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles range from light grey to yellow to green (yes) to brown to almost black. Why is that? I've no idea, but I can vouch for the spread in color with direct observations. So why do they call these cute, solitary, largely vegetarian turtles Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles? I think it's because we become green with envy at how sweet-natured, easy-going...

The Turtle Dances

Posted by Betty and Dan on Monday, May 6, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
I don't think I've shared that I'm a multi-award-winning author of a variety of books ranging from non-ficition educational works to poetry collections to novels and children's books. My first children's book, SOURDOUGH SCOTT'S BEDTIME FAIRYTALES FROM ALASKA (Publication Consultants, 2005) is a collection of three "modern" fairy tales I made up and told around campfires throughout Alaska until someone suggested I write them down for posterity.

That done, I wrote a non-fiction education work, ...

Special Lunch and Dinner for a Working Woman

Posted by Betty and Dan on Monday, April 22, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
I enjoyed making lunch and dinner today for Betty. It's her day off and she deserves it. She works so hard. I appreciate her.

For lunch we had Danish "open-face" sandwiches. Each small sandwich was one quarter of a slice of toasted rye bread, with mayonnaise, fresh ground pepper, and special toppings. These included "spicy tuna" (Hawaiian "pupu" or appetizer; Japanese sashimi), Italian prosciutto, or Roma tomato slice. Then, from our garden either a leaf of Manoa lettuce, basil, mint or shiso...
