WHERE HAVE ALL THE CUCUMBERS GONE? 胡瓜よ!どこへ行っちゃったの?

Posted by Betty on Monday, October 18, 2021, In : Betty's Blogs
Our Japanese cucumbers are [surprise, surprise] still making wonderfully tasty cucumbers despite the plant looking sad, with drying leaves and browning of leaves. Only one small part of the vine has healthy green leaves. The first harvest was 5 excellent cucumbers [yum] which we used for salads and chikuwa. The second harvest was 5 more though it took almost a month to revive and produce. This is the third harvest, and I've found 3 flowers with baby cucumbers though it's taken a month.

Discovery my book! 本の事で再確認!

Posted by Betty on Wednesday, March 10, 2021, In : Betty's Blogs
I am still translating my book, THE POWER OF DANCE from English to Japanese. Today I asked my husband, Dan, some questions about the translation. He asked me that what is the genre of your new book? Eh? I was confused.

"Is your book fiction or non-fiction?" he asked. Now, he became once again an English 101 professor, and I returned to being a college student.

"It is non-fiction," I replied.

"Will it be a textbook?" he asked.

"Maybe," I replied. "Maybe not."

He reminded me that if it is a textb...

MORNING CHAT モーニングチャット

Posted by Betty on Friday, February 26, 2021, In : Betty's Blogs
Dan and I wake up at 6:00 am, BUT He usually gets up right after he wakes while I like to lounge about in bed in the morning.

Today, we both stayed in bed and talked about subjectivity and objectively. We talked their meanings in English and Japanese. He said Japanese words are very rich in meaning. For example, when we write a name in kanji, both the characters and their combination together have meaning, typically more than one. On the other hand, when he writes his name (Dan) using characte...

FRUSTRATION? YOU BET!

Posted by Betty on Saturday, January 23, 2021, In : Betty's Blogs
I have been unemployed (technically on furlough) for almost a year now. My new "job" is  to contact the unemployed office every two weeks, but when I called, the recording on the other side said that we sorry that it is not able to use this number. What? I called this number yesterday and everything worked. Why? I have big frustration.

So, I called an alternate number. Sorry, we are so busy! Please call again. [click]. I have even bigger frustration!

Today, I decided to calm down and cook Japan...

Essays!

Posted by Betty on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, In : Betty's Blogs
Aloha!

Still staying-at-home in Honolulu. I have plenty of time so far, because COVID-19 IS still spreading here. So I decided to publish a second book, tentatively entitled, "It All Begins with Dance," in both Japanese and English.

Before writing the book, I want to clear the difference between expository essay and research paper. So, what's the difference?

I studied writing essays and research papers in an American undergraduate college, but that was some years ago. However, in fact. I am sud...

JAPANESE SPAGHETTI (日本のイタリアンスパゲティ)

Posted by Betty on Thursday, August 20, 2020, In : Betty's Blogs
Today I made Japanese spaghetti for Dan. He kept asking me to use my Japanese cooking knowledge to make spaghetti. How to do it?

I boiled up some authentic Italian spaghetti al dente

I decided to use American tomato sauce as the base, and added some ketchup. Then I added some homemade vegetable broth and some A-1 sauce (Dan is American and likes both ketchup and A-1 sauce). To make it taste "Japanese," I sautéed pieces of Arabiki sausage (Arabiki means "coarse ground sausage") and shiitake ...

EXERCISING DURING A "LOCKDOWN" (外出禁止令中の運動)

Posted by Betty on Monday, April 27, 2020, In : Betty's Blogs
I expect that in the coming years we will be experiencing additional epidemics/pandemics and lockdowns, so, if you're "stuck at home" and are bored with nothing to do, may I suggest this:  Japan's children are introduced to exercise before they start school. They perform basic active range of motion movements for toning and suppleness.

Later, as "radio calesthenics" to popular music, they were broadcast for adults to use in the mornings. They are not designed to increase cardiovascular reserv...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Posted by Betty on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, In : Betty's Blogs
Happy New Year!!

It has been so busy a new year.  I went to work on New Year's Day.  After working, Dan and I attended my editor's wedding in the evening on January second (my editor, David, is editing my upcoming book, IN SEARCH OF SOMATIC THERAPY).  The weather was heavy with rain but the wedding had so many people and was a very relaxed ceremony.

It has been three years since Dan injured his knee and his doctor said to forget about dancing. He recommended surgery and said he had a 75% chance...

My Husband, Dan!

Posted by Betty and Dan on Friday, June 7, 2013, In : Betty's Blogs
Aloha!

I write in English tonight, too.  When I went to my interview, I realized that I want to improve English more so I tried to write my Blog in English.  This is challenging for me and how much I can write it in English.
May be I will write my Blog in Japanese tomorrow.  I already am tired to write my Blog in English.

Today, I write about part one of my husband.  Dan,
American, my husband and I met in California (CA). When my lady friend and I went to social dance class at YMCA in Berkeley CA...

Inspiration

Posted by Betty and Dan on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
This morning I woke up and quickly wrote down a poem for Betty. I hope she likes it (I think she does). It is for her. One of a kind. Hers and hers alone.

The poem came to me in a flash, as if by magic, from God, or from the Greek muses.

I know it's not "high poetry" but rather its "heart poetry" -- from the bottom of my heart.

Where does inspiration come from? In this case, it really wasn't magic, or God or the Greek muses. It was from my love of Betty. She's the most important person in my w...
