THE TRUTH, THE WHOLE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH

Posted by Dan Janik on Monday, March 11, 2019, In : Dan's Blogs
Over the decades, I've had the opportunity to watch American society change. That it inexorably does change is close to a truism. Each generation that's born into the work begins assuming what they experience is "normal" and becomes a baseline for trying to ferret out what "true" and what's, well, untrue. That task has become a lot harder this decade. What with coercive advertising, spun facts, "fake news," "social reality" (largely via the internet), superheroes everywhere and a level of pro...

FROZEN IN HAWAII

Posted by Setsuko Tsuchiya on Monday, October 1, 2018, In : Dan's Blogs
Watching Disney's "Frozen" reminds us that somewhere in the world, there's more snow than just shave ice in a bowl. Shave ice is Hawaii's way of remembering what winter is like elsewhere. In fact, my favorite winter (i.e. shave ice) is Waialua dark chocolate flavor. Yumm. Now that's what I call winter.

Being originally from Alaska, I'm often asked why I moved to Hawaii. Sunshine, tradewinds, sweet smelling flowers, lots of great ballroom and latin dancing. I'm equally often asked if I miss Al...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Posted by Betty on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, In : Betty's Blogs
Happy New Year!!

It has been so busy a new year.  I went to work on New Year's Day.  After working, Dan and I attended my editor's wedding in the evening on January second (my editor, David, is editing my upcoming book, IN SEARCH OF SOMATIC THERAPY).  The weather was heavy with rain but the wedding had so many people and was a very relaxed ceremony.

It has been three years since Dan injured his knee and his doctor said to forget about dancing. He recommended surgery and said he had a 75% chance...

Is it Really a New Year?

Posted by Dan and Betty on Wednesday, January 1, 2014, In : Dan's Blogs
It's December 31st. No question. But I wonder if, at one minute after midnight the old year will end and a new one begin. Not that the calendar won't change from 2013 to 2014. No, that will definitely happen. Not that the big ball in New York City won't fall. That, too, will definitely happen. Not that the world's leaders won't give a New Year's address. God forbid! Not that we won't have fireworks in Honolulu. Well, maybe there it starts to gray.

Actually, looking out our large window at Wai...

Wadjda

Posted by Betty and Dan on Monday, October 28, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
This weekend, Betty and I fled from the October heat and humidity by going to a "refrigerated" movie house. To both our surprise, the move we chose to cool ourselves in turned out to be one of the best we've seen in ages. "Wadjda" is the story of a 10-year-old Saudi girl's mental coming-of-age in a Salafi Sunni Muslim environment. Filmed by a Saudi director in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, with Saudi actors and actresses, the movie is a "must see" for non-Muslims attempting to puzzle through today's d...

Fowl Weather

Posted by Betty and Dan on Thursday, June 6, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
Betty and I moved to Hawaii in 1993, and for the next 14 years (7 x 2) the weather here has been warmer, surprisingly with less rain. In 1993, the pattern was, starting in January, cool and dry, slowly warming and getting more humid to September, when it was very humid and very hot. Then the rains would come. Tropical storms with occasional hurricanes the dumped so much water at a time, we sometimes had to stop driving, being unable to see anything several feet in front of the windshield. Now...

No-beconomics

Posted by Betty and Dan on Monday, June 3, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
Do people really control "the economy?" Does "the economy" control us? Or is "the economy" simply justification for doing whatever "we" -- the government, corporations or the people -- want?

The first problem with the idea of being able to "control the economy" is that "money," it's basic currency, has become an illusion. Money is only "real" to those who believe they possess it, or "don't have enough." In the end, "not enough money" is an excuse for not doing something. There is always enoug...

Peter Pan

Posted by Betty and Dan on Sunday, May 19, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
The "Peter Pan Syndrome" is said to "affect people who do not want or feel unable to grow up, people with the body of an adult but the mind of a child" or "describes men, who are childlike in their relationships, their ability to handle responsibilities, and their pursuit of pleasure." Well enough, but what it's really about is curiosity and the joy of discovery -- the simpler joys of childhood.

In this world of money, money, money, and power, power, power, wouldn't it be nice to share somet...

What Color is a Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle?

Posted by Betty and Dan on Thursday, May 16, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
Okay - the answer must be green, Right?

Wrong!

I've been turtle-watching for over 5 years now all along the Oahu coastline, and Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles range from light grey to yellow to green (yes) to brown to almost black. Why is that? I've no idea, but I can vouch for the spread in color with direct observations. So why do they call these cute, solitary, largely vegetarian turtles Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles? I think it's because we become green with envy at how sweet-natured, easy-going...

What to Do About Guns?

Posted by Betty and Dan on Saturday, May 4, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
The USA is once again embroiled in discussions about what to do about guns. On the one hand, our nation was born in armed revolution. On the other hand, we are no longer engaged in revolution, and guns are being use as weapons of injury and death against citizens on more than a daily basis. It is being suggested that the US government have stricter "gun control laws," but this doesn't seem to me likely to work for two reasons: First, those who would use a gun to threaten or kill another human...

Good Evening!

Golden Armadillo

Posted by Betty and Dan on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, In : Dan's Blogs
Aloha.  Do you know what this is?  Hint: It is an ancient animal from the days of the dinosaurs. It's an armadillo. We have a Golden Armadillo "pet" that was given to us by friends in Oklahoma for good luck.

Oklahoma is located in the middle of the USA, next to Texas. Oklahoma has many armadillos. Of course, I've never actually seen a live one in Oklahoma, but that's what Oklahomans tell me (I have, however, seen deer, hummingbirds, squirrels and cardinals when visiting there). But back to ...
