Today I talk a whale's tale. 

Dan and I watched Nature on TV. It is about a whale that breaches onto two people on the kayak in the ocean in California. The two people in the Kayak jumped in the ocean as the whale twisted allowing the two people to escape. A big splash and two people were swimming in the ocean.                                                                       

One person who was touched the whale spent the next year trying to learn more about the accident and the whale. He asked many whale specialists for information and began leaning about whales.

When I watched this program, I was so surprised. First, many people were hanging out where the whales were feeding, and the whales were hanging around people who were doing ocean sports. Second, in Hawaii, we are not allowed approach the whales or get close to them. Third, I think whales are actually friendly to people in spite of how badly people have treated them. Fourth, whales are very smart.

During a similar event, a lady was taking videos of whales when a killer shark approached. She was frightened when one whale kept pushing her around. The whale was actually protecting her and trying to drive away the shark. Even when the whale that upturned the kayak, it didn't want to crush the people; that is why the whale twisted at the last moment to avoid hurting them. Usually whales don't twist when they breach, one specialist said.

My husband said, actually, whales are both smart and kind. I agree with that, because they travel from Alaska to Hawaii and back if they are not smart, they could not navigate such a long trip trip every year.


My husband wrote a children's "Color-me-Please" book about whales called A WHALE'S TALE (Savant 2009). It is a very interesting and heartwarming story. Please read this book and tell him what you think.

We go to the North shore every weekend during the winter to watch for whales training their babies. We will go whale watching tomorrow morning and enjoying watching them with strong whale-watching binoculars from the shore as they practice and teach whale behaviors.

今日はクジラの話をします。

ダンと私はテレビでネイチャー番組を見ました。カリフォルニアの海を楽しんでいたカヤックの2人に侵入したクジラについてです。カヤックの2人は、クジラがねじれて2人が逃げることができるように、海に飛び込みました。大きな水しぶきと共にその２人は海でに放り出されてしまいました。

クジラに触れた一人は、翌年、事故とクジラについてもっと知りたいと思った。彼は多くのクジラの専門家に情報を求め、クジラについて学び始めました。

この番組を見てびっくりしました。まず、クジラが餌を食べているところにたくさんの人がブラブラしていて、クジラはオーシャンスポーツをしている人の周りにブラブラていました。

第二に、ハワイでは、鯨に近づいたりすることは許可されていません。第三に、クジラは人々がどれほどひどい扱いをしているにも関わらず、実際には人々に優しいと思います。第四に、鯨は非常に賢いです。

番組の中で、同じ様な事が起きたのですが、キラーサメが近づいた時、女性がクジラのビデオを撮っていました。１頭のクジラが彼女を押し続けていた時、彼女はおびえていました。クジラは実際に彼女を保護し、サメを追い払おうとしていたのです。カヤックをひっくり返したクジラが人々を押しつぶしたくなかった時でも、クジラは傷つけないように最後の瞬間に身体をねじりました。ある専門家によると、通常、クジラは水面上に飛び上がる時は、身体をねじらないと言う事です。

夫は、実際、クジラは賢くて親切だと言います。彼らはアラスカからハワイへ、そして賢くなければ戻ってくる事は出来ないし、毎年こんなに長い旅をすることができなかったはずだと、、。私もそう思います。

又、夫は、クジラについての子供向けの「Color-me-Please」（塗り絵の本）であり、Bed time story でもある、A WHALE'S TALE（Savant 2009）を出版しました。とても面白くて心温まる話です。この本を読んで、あなたの考えを彼に伝えて下さい。

私達は、冬の間は毎週末ノースショアに行き、親クジラが赤ちゃんを訓練しているのを観察します。明日の朝はホエールウォッチングに行き、海岸からホエールウォッチング双眼鏡でクジラの行動や教えたり、練習している鯨の様子をホエールウォッチングしながら楽しみます。

クジラを観ながら楽しんでそして鯨を保護して下さい。彼らは私たちの友達です。
